On the sidelines of the 12th extraordinary session, African Union Heads of State and Governments meeting in Niamey, Niger President Muhammadu Buhari signed the African Continental Free Trade Agreement, on behalf of Nigeria.
The Nigerian Government earlier decline to the signing of the initial treaty at the AU summit in Kigali, Rwanda. A committee was constituted by the president last year to carry out a holistic examination of all factors and circumstances surrounding the agreement and the implication that Nigeria’s involvement in the agreement may have on its economy.
The National Office of Trade Negotiations worked with relevant stakeholders to align the AFCTA agreement with Nigeria’s interests.
With the signing of the AFCTA, Nigeria has consented to the agreement that is expected to drive Trade and development in the African region.
While commenting on the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, MAN called on the Nigerian Government to ensure the interest of Nigeria is protected in the agreement.
